I started today’s blog post by looking for all things yellow. But I came across so many amazing graphics that I had to narrow the the search – the focus for now is on textiles, prints and wall paper but I hope to have a part II or III that explores this dynamic color further.

I chose these 2D works because they are all singularly beautiful and yet could be combined to create a monochromatic but highly energized space or event.

Our latest inspiration. . . travel. With destination weddings and events on the rise and parties and reunions centered around exotic travel, it’s worth a look to see how we might translate the idea of maps into our party decor.

P.S.-I Made This
If you’re feeling crafty, we thought these platters were cute enough to try on our own. A sweet and simple design from a newish book called “P.S.-I Made This…“. It’s filled with cute DIY inspiration projects from Erica Domesek.

Photo booths are all the rage at events and parties! And why not? They are a great way to keep guests busy and interested, and let’s face it, people love to get their photos taken. We’ve included a couple fun ideas for creating your own photo booths below.

We pulled a couple of these photos from our reservoir. This was from our first event, a New Year’s Eve party in 2008! Super simple: just set up a camera with a shutter release cable, hang a picture frame and a backdrop of curtains, and presto! Complete entertainment all night! The hardest part is sifting through all 1200+ photos!

We just love this idea from Ivy and Aster: taking old books and illustrations to make a backdrop! You could use any kind of book. Old atlas’ would be so cool.

This is a great selection of ideas from the people over at Smilebooth. Get inspired from them or just hire them to set up a booth for you!

Welcome to a new week. Every Monday seems the same sometimes. . . 5 more days until the weekend again? Hopefully, we can liven your Monday up with a little color and inspiration. We’ve found 4 artists (some right here in the Bay Area!) who turn simple everyday elements (string and tape) into beautiful pieces of art. Linear patterns can seemingly have a flat dimensional quality, but the following artists have challenged themselves by playing with color and placement in space to enhance the way we observe everyday rigidity (like those Monday’s). Maybe we can take some inspiration from them and spice up our Monday.

JANA FLYNN
A Bay Area native, Jana Flynn‘s work has been showcased in various galleries in California and New York. Her works’ elegant textures are still strong and bold.

MEGAN GECKLER
Megan Geckler is a Los Angeles-based installation artist who creates site-specific one-of-a-kind installations using flagging tape.

GABRIEL DAWE
LS has been watching this artist for quite some time. I could stare at the vibrant colors in his work for hours. Gabriel Dawe was born in Mexico City where he grew up surrounded by the intensity and color of Mexican culture. After working as a graphic designer, he eventually wanted to explore textiles and embroidery.

SABINE RECKEWELL
Sabine Reckewell was born in Germany, where she was trained in industrial design and moved to the United States to expand her textile design work into sculpture, installation and performance art at the University of California, Davis. She just recently returned to the Bay Area and installed this piece of art at Chandra Cerrito Contemporary Gallery in Oakland.

We absolutely love this photo shoot, staged by our friend from Jillian Clark Events and featured on 100 Layer Cake. What a great concept for a small Sunday afternoon get together. . . an ice cream social. This is not just any ice cream party but a sophisticated and classy version for the kid in all of us. The beautiful signs were done with the help of the calligrapher from Love Jenna. Look at some of these decadent but simple toppings to liven up your party: candied ginger, pistachios with olive oil, strawberries with balsamic! We’re just drooling thinking about it! Thanks for the great inspiration Jillian and Jenna!

Storefronts that inspire can be few and far between in downtown Oakland. But keep looking and you’ll find some crafty gems in the Uptown area that engage the community and bring a breath of life to our local streets. We invite you to take a closer look at some of the DIY highlights we’ve discovered on foot.

This installation just appeared last week like a freshly spun spider web. Smiths’ workshop storefront is always evolving and usually speaks to the work going on inside.

As a graphic designer I can’t help but be pulled in by hand drawn typography (well, any cool font actually). I wanted to share with you some of the recent typography that I’ve found. The type itself almost becomes a work of art when completed. Whether you simply get pleasure from type as art, or inspiration for event signs, menus or invitations, the pieces below have certainly caught LS’s attention.

Hand Lettering Typography

Above: 1. Threaded typography from artist Debbie Smyth, (props to the Art Faith Love blog for helping us find her!). 2. Illustration from Darren Booth. 3. Custom Chalk Lettering from the talented Dana Tanamachi in Brooklyn. This was done for a wedding. 4. Vintage transit letters inspire a font used in a wedding pulled from 100 Layer Cake.

This week’s Inspiration comes from the artist Theo Altenberg. We love his ethereal paintings and use of bold color and texture. This piece (01) is just dripping with ideas for translating his work spatially (02-05).
