Yvette Molina is a regular (if you will) at Oakland, CA’s Johansson Projects’ gallery, although her work has been all the way from Uruguay to France to Hawaii. I happened across her most recent exhibit at Johansson Projects just this past weekend and became fascinated. Her work is inspired by a deep fascination with plant life, in which she pulls from extensively from her collection of living specimans. Her signature is to paint upon aluminum which gives her paintings a rich and unique texture and glow. Yvette’s bio mentions her move into the public art work… I can’t wait to see what this form of art for her will look like.

In a spirit that very much reminds me of Japanese Ink Painting Sumi-E, Adam Doyle uses long swift brushstrokes to create bold and beautiful pieces of art. His paintings feel very effortless, but each takes a considerable amount of time to find the right stroke.

“Each painting takes a bit of working and reworking to arrive at the place where every brush stroke fits into a fluidly flowing whole. It’s important to me to find a balance between an elegance of form that holds both visible marks of paint and a representation of ‘energy within.”

Meme, from Few and Far (the group of talented street artist women), just sent over the newly released video of their road trip back in April of this year. The group of women traveled to 5 different cities across the West to spread their talent to the good people of Sacramento, SF, LA ,San Diego and Tijuana Mexico. Read my interview with Meme earlier this year.

Mixed Media artist Amy Rice has a very unique and eclectic way of working with various natural media. It must be so much fun to watch her work in person. She works with various textiles, paint, cotton canvases, potato stamps, spray paints and hand drawn stencils to create very soft and engaging pieces. I think more than anything I am drawn to the textural quality of her designs.

Moco did a cool spotlight on her studio in Minneapolis. Read about it right here.

If you’re in the Oakland area this weekend and happen to be in need of buying some fun art to hang on your wall, I just got wind of a sale that might tickle your artistic sensibilities. Thomas Christopher Haag is an Oakland based artist soon to be leaving his space at Faultline Artspace for what he calls, “hittin the road like a dirty gypsy”. I’ve always liked his mural projects that can be seen all over Oakland’s urban landscape, but his paintings are super unique, upbeat and will add interest to any wall in your home. I hope you’ll be back.

The sale will be on Sunday Aug 19th at Faultline from 6-9pm. The pieces will be going for 50-75% off gallery prices.

As I was purusing one of my favorite art blogs, Booooooom, I came across a lovely discovery for an art show in Paris. Sure, not all of us can just whip over to Paris on a moments notice, but we can try to soak up as much as we can from right here at our computers and the Local Social blog. : )

Greetings, featuring a collection of new work from Kyle Field, Nathaniel Russell, and Alia Shawkat (you may recognize her as Maeby from Arrested Development).

While the story is about these three artists, the story chronicling their adventure is being told by the curator and photographer Danielle Rubi. Without Danielle’s extensive library of photos and videos, we wouldn’t have the chance to view this work. So, a big thank you to all involved!

Through the work the artists commit themselves to “…explore the literal and abstracted meanings of a greeting: the first words from an unknown being, a message from a foreign land, a signal from the afterlife, a connection of the individual with the infinite, a personal plea to the universe, or a presence emerging from the dark.” or more simply put, “a greeting is the turning point between the unknown and the known.”

Almost all of the work was created in a village in Burgandy, in the three weeks leading up to the show opening in Paris. Sounds pretty amazing. What a great way to be inspired.

The show is taking place right now in Brachfeld Gallery in Paris.
